“Til Death Do Us Part,” presented by Jim and Gretchen Kennedy

October 30 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

The Juniata Civics is hosting a Halloween event on October 30, 2022 at 2 pm, at the Juniata Civics building, located at 206 West 12th Avenue, Altoona. This event is a fundraiser for the upkeep of the 84 year old building, located in Juniata since 1938. This event is a historical talk about death and its customs and will feature displays of embalming equipment and mourning jewelry, along with a Civil War funeral. Come join us for “Til Death Do Us Part,” presented by Jim and Gretchen Kennedy, officers with the Juniata Civics and members of the 110th PA Co F.

Come hear of Victorian funeral customs, see actual embalming equipment from the 1880’s, which will be on loan from the E. Merrill Smith Funeral Home. See mourning jewelry, post mortem photos, and pay your respects to a fallen Civil War soldier. Hear of James Shirley, the first man hung in Blair County in 1853, who brutally murdered his wife in 1852. This is a non-scary event and will give a historical look at death during the Victorian age. A donation of $5 will be taken at the door, and will help with the upkeep of the building. Check out the Juniata Civics on Facebook for upcoming events.
